Olivia Culpo has come far from her days as Miss USA and Miss Universe. The beauty pageant queen turned model, actress and media personality has garnered film roles, including playing the female lead in “Venus as a Boy,” and has snagged influencer partnerships with brands like L’Oréal, Kipling and Uberliss.

Now, Culpo is further solidifying her place as a fashion trendsetter. During New York Fashion Week, she gave WWD some insight as to how she gets ready with shoe brand Sam Edelman for the annual fashion fest and tips on developing a personal style.

WWD: When building an outfit, what do you start with first and why?
Olivia Culpo: I thrive on the thrill of creating a captivating look and, for me, it all begins with a bold statement accessory. Whether it’s a pair of amazing pumps that demand attention (like my Sam Edelman selects), or a special designer bag, that sets the tone for my entire ensemble. Today, I wore a Jacquemus top, a Bottega bag, sunglasses by Loewe and, of course, my new Sam Edelman shoes that I picked up at their SoHo New York store.

WWD: How important are shoes in crafting the rest of your look?
O.C.: I chose the Michaela mary janes shoes at [Sam Edelman’s] SoHo store because they are the absolute go-to shoes for my look — so chic, comfortable and perfect for this crazy fashion week, where I’m constantly running from shows to parties. I also love their sneakers; they are a total must-have.

WWD: Why are you a fan of Sam Edelman? How many pairs of Sam Edelman shoes do you own?
O.C.: You know, when it comes to my Sam Edelman collection, I’ve lost count. Sam and Libby Edelman always create amazing new shoes inspired by so many things, from their travels around the world to their passion for horses, as well as the comfort and beauty that every woman deserves.

WWD: Finish this sentence. No good look is complete without…?
O.C.: Gratitude, confidence and, of course, one killer accessory.

WWD: What’s the most exciting thing to you about a fashion week show?
O.C.: I love the anticipation of each designer’s new collection. Fashion really is moving art that’s inspirational in countless ways.
